Karen, NYC Soda Girl will contact you via the email you entered when commenting to see where you would like your gift card sent!

A huge ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who entered!

My youngest daughter, who we will call ‘Bunny’ picked the #4 from a box of numbers 1-7, while my older children, who we will call “Buddy & Beanie” observed and verified the validity of her selection.  The older 2 reminded me of the overseers of the Emmy votes…Did you all see the hilarious, if not uncomfortable introduction James Corden gave Ernst & Young this year?

NYC Shake Shack Soda

I spent some time near Madison Square Park this week. I’ve really come to love this park over the past few years. It has wonderful programming for children (music, book reading…), beautiful art installations and truthfully just walking through it can calm you down during a hectic day. One prominent feature of the park is Shake Shack. If you’re from (or near) the city you won’t need this explanation, but for those of you who aren’t you need to understand something…people line up and sometimes wait an HOUR just to place an order here-that doesn’t include the cooking time! Shake Shack’s website even has a live feed “Shack Cam” so you can see how long the line is – it can get pretty crazy.

While I was there this week, I noticed the line was “only” 20 people deep, so I decided to go for it and indulge my palate with a hot dog and fries. This happened to be on a day when I had a few hours of being “kid-less” and it was actually pleasant waiting in line. I was able to take some deep breaths, do some people watching and even notice this butterfly:

I actually stop at Shake Shack almost every time I pass through the park, and when I do, I take advantage of their “C-line”. The “C-line” is the line on the left:

Do you notice the big difference? No people! It’s Shake Shack’s Express line and you can order these items if you use this line:

c-line

I frequently order myself a Diet Coke and the beauty of the “C-line” is that when you just order a soda, they hand it to you right when you pay – no wait! However, this day I wanted lunch, so I waited to order and then it was only 7 minutes after, that my buzzer buzzed and my food was ready. Oddly there was plenty of seating available, so I found a spot and had my first sip of Diet Coke. It was a great first sip – full of flavor and soda sizzle. It complemented my food well. By mid-meal (and this was a short meal mind you) the soda became quite watery. I’ve noticed this before at Shake Shack. Perhaps it’s the way they make the ice…maybe it isn’t frozen enough before it’s served? But it’s a shame, because the soda experience started out great and the hot dog and fries were terrific!

So there you have it, my afternoon soda at the Shack! Have any of you noticed this about the ice? Or do you have any other Shake Shack experiences you want to share? Comment below and let us know!

Upper East Side Finds and Fails

I wanted to start my day off right on Saturday, so I headed to the McDonald’s on 69th and 1st Ave for my Diet Coke.  When I walked in I was optimistic.  The store was clean and had cute NYC murals along the wall.  It wasn’t too crowded.  It had just enough people for me to not have to worry if it was a McDonald’s that should be avoided.

The wait on line wasn’t too bad either-the staff working seemed efficient.  This McDonald’s isn’t self-service, so you don’t have control over the ice/soda ratio.  The first sip didn’t blow me away – it was fine.  However, being the first sip of anything that day, I did expect the drink would wake up my taste buds, which it didn’t.  I also didn’t feel the urge to slurp the whole thing down,.

We met up with friends for a playdate, which unbeknownst to us was to include a water table. Of course within the first 15 minutes my youngest daughter was completely saturated.  I know, mommy-fail for not having brought extra clothes, but she’s almost 2 and I haven’t packed extra clothes for her in months.  My husband stayed with our kids and I went in search of a store to buy her a dry outfit.  There really aren’t many children’s clothes stores in the East 70s, so I took a cab to the Gap on 85th & 3rd.  At this point I still hadn’t finished my soda and it got that dull taste soda can get, way sooner than expected, so I just threw it out.  That was disappointing, but my spirits were soon lifted when I found the cutest Disney themed clothes at the Gap!  (I love Disney, more than a little you’ll come to see.)  I bought my daughter this cute and glittery Tinkerbell shirt and some polka dot pants.

On the way back to to what was becoming a very expensive playdate, I picked up a can of Diet Coke at a bodega which wound up being way more refreshing than my 1st drink of the day, so that should explain my rating.

Are there any neighborhoods you’d like me to check out sooner than later?  Please post in the comments!  I’m excited to find the best soda experiences out there!

Dazed and Confused Soda Surprises

Best NYC soda, beverages, mom, New York City, NYC, soda, soda fountain, Uncategorized

It’s not just kids who get first week of school jitters – moms do too.  At least that’s what I’m going to blame this week’s bout of insomnia on.  It hasn’t been pretty. I’ve been staying up until 4am every night only to wake up 3 or 4 hours later, pretending I’m equipped to face the day.  After a week of this, I am a zombie.  I basically have been doing the bare minimum to get myself ready in the morning, then I actually get all 3 kids (2 preschoolers and a toddler) fully ready and then I sleep walk through the day.

Thursday and Friday I’m not sure how we all made it out the door.

Thankfully we all did and Thursday I was even able to meet up with a friend for a snack (you know, what most people call “let’s get coffee” but I don’t drink coffee).  I wound up ordering this…

panera

…only to realize later that I hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch and just mindlessly ordered this as my first meal of the day. (I will say, the vanilla cupcake was delicious. Icing was just sweet enough and the cake was moist and tasty.  The pumpkin cookie was just too cute to pass up, but truthfully didn’t taste as good as it looked.)

I know, I know…who cares?

Well, my new zombie state led me to make a very important soda discovery.  You see, I am a diehard Diet Coke drinker – like take a blood sample from me and you will see that Diet Coke runs through my veins.  For me nothing else compares. Panera only sells Pepsi.  Truth be told, I tend to select eateries that sell Coke products over those that sell Pepsi products, but Panera was close by and I stumbled into it with my good friend.  As I mindlessly took my first sip of the Diet Pepsi, my mind lit up. Could this be? The perfectly chilled, sparkling gush of goodness that I just sipped was Diet Pepsi?  I was expecting this soda experience to be just the hydrating of my body – but no – this was good!  Each sip that followed was too!  I never thought I’d be able to say it – but I found a fountain that makes a very satisfying Pepsi product!

The next day I had another soda surprise…well maybe more like a soda “what the…?”  I was picking the kids up from a class…still sleep walking…searching for a Diet Coke.  In the distance I saw a vending machine.  “Oh thank God!” I thought.  The kids and I raced over only to find this:

what the?

What on Earth type of vending machine selection is this?? Confused, we all just walked away.  I was too tired to use any energy trying to decide which of these 3 soda choices would do.  I’ll go back another time and try one out and report back…but really??

So there you have it. Insomnia brought me 2 new soda surprises…and truthfully all my extra time awake did help me get this blog off the ground.  So CHEERS to insomnia!
